pictured here are the archway islands on the northern tip of the south island of new zealand just offshore on wharariki beach...and when i walked out onto wharariki beach (pronounced: far-a-reeky) on this morning, the beach whispered "kia ora" to me using its voice in the soft seabreeze, as i walked barefoot through the sugary sand dunes listening to the waves gently kiss the shore as puffy clouds floated by overhead aimlessly whispering kia ora as well...
"[in new zealand], it's really important to acknowledge a person. by using the words "kia ora," we acknowledge not just them, but everything about them, including where they come from, who they come from, and who they are" ― arekatera maihi, ngati whatua ki orakei
"kia ora" is a warm and welcoming greeting you'll hear throughout new zealand and comes from the indigenous maori language, te reo.
in its simplest form, "kia ora" means hello, or welcome. but these two little words signify more than just a passing greeting. in its literal sense, ''ora" refers to a state of living, or being alive. but by using ‘kia’ along with it, grammar rules change it from a noun to a verb, so rather than 'alive' it is 'living'. so when you say kia ora to someone, you are wishing the essence of life upon them.
although the words' origins are steeped in history, kia ora is used as an informal greeting throughout new zealand. you will hear everyone from the prime minister, to the flight attendant, to the local shopkeeper using it in day-to-day conversation.
"i loved you from the first time i said hello...every time i see you now, i just want to say hello to you over and over again" ― bodhinku, hello again

THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE
"when my eyes meet yours, i feel so at home, and i think to myself, ahhh, there you are, hello" ― bodhinku, home hello
...i am still breathless and humbled by the beauty i got to see and photograph on this morning on wharariki beach at the northernmost tip of the south island of new zealand...
such a peacefully calm morning with pastel colors glowing all around, surrounding everything in their subtle luminescence...as i walk along alone, i am not alone, the silky and sparkling white-golden sands tickle my feet, the gentle waves beckon me to join them as they kiss the shore to play on the beach, all-the-while soft puffy white clouds float by through powder blue skies overhead, so close you can almost reach out and touch them, it's like you're still in a dream and have not awakened yet...but i was awake, and alive in the moment. mother nature was speaking to me, and i was listening, i heard her clearly, i felt the true deeper meaning of "kia ora"...
...and i hope you love the picture i was able to create here before you today, and that it can transport you to what i got to experience and feel on this beautiful magical morning, 20th february, 2020 (20-02-2020)...
to get to this beach, it is a short walk from a carpark that goes across small hilltops with grazing sheep, through a small grove of really cool wind-twisted trees, and then a nice stroll across windswept sand dunes out to the ocean waters...
i was here the night previous, but got battered by high winds that felt like they were sand blasting the skin right off my face...and to this day, i still feel like i am blinking out sand when my eyes water...i endured this because i was on the beach hoping to witness something special under the stars, but unfortunately it did not happen...but i still had the hope of my second night on the beach for my plans to follow to fruition, which would happen later in the evening on this day when i captured this image here, and that special night is a tale of an upcoming image release...
on this morning, i was very happy that the winds had not only subsided from the previous night, but that they had gone away almost entirely (much more conducive for me to create long exposure photos in my own style)...and as i made my way to the beach, the early morning violets were still lingering in the sky from predawn, adding a beautiful warming color cast to the entire scenery...
on my first trip to wharariki beach in 2015, i managed to create some wonderful images, especially capturing the super reflective qualities of wharariki beach's wet sands, the ones i call "surrealist dreams" and "whar far away" and "captivate" (click on each of the blue links to view each image here on my website)...however, i failed to capture any good images from back in the sand dunes looking out on to the beach, which i always regretted...so on this morning, that was my focus, i climbed up into the sand dunes above the beach, and found a beautiful perspective between the blades of beach grass which created a unique point of view of wharariki beach and the archway islands pictured here in my new impression, "kia ora"...
and now if you would like, here is some more music to listen to as you read my blog...another beautiful song full of meaning very descriptive to how i feel about new zealand... "welcome to wonderland" by anson seabra (just click on the song title, it is a link to the lyric video)...
"welcome to wonderland, we've got it all...potions and pastries that make you grow tall, forests and cottages, castles and cards that can talk. welcome to wonderland, look where you're at, maddest of hatters, the cheshire cat, magical cabins and lovely white rabbits with clocks dancing through a dream underneath the stars laughing 'til the morning comes. everyone that leaves has a heavy heart, oh, wonderland i love. welcome to wonderland, i'll be your guide holding your hand under sapphire skies. let's go exploring or we could just go for a walk. welcome to wonderland, where should we go? there's a tea party along down the road. make an appearance and maybe they'll sing us a song. dancing through a dream underneath the stars, laughing 'til the morning comes. everyone that leaves has a heavy heart oh, wonderland i love...nothing around here is quite as it seems. not sure if anything's real or a dream. and the only thing sure from the start is the song that's inside of your heart, don't let it leave. if this was a dream, then at least i've got memories for when morning comes. now that i must leave with a heavy heart oh, won-derland, i love" ― anson seabra, welcome to wonderland
“see the openness of the ocean. now feel that your mind is more open and welcoming than that” ― debasish mridha

HISTORY OF THE WHARARIKI BEACH
"such a peacefully calm morning with pastel colors glowing all around, surrounding everything in their subtle luminescence...as i walk along alone, i am not alone, the silky and sparkling white-golden sands tickle my feet, the gentle waves beckon me to join them as they kiss the shore to play on the beach, all-the-while soft puffy white clouds float by through powder blue skies overhead, so close you can almost reach out and touch them, it's like you're still in a dream and have not awakened yet" ― bodhinku, wharariki
wharariki beach is a beach slightly west of cape farewell, the northernmost point of the south island of new zealand. this north-facing sandy beach is accessible only via a 20-minute walking track from the end of wharariki road. the road end is approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the nearest settlement, the small village of puponga. a campground is located along wharariki road, but the area surrounding the beach is devoid of any development. wharariki beach is bordered by puponga farm park, with the wider area more or less surrounded by the northern end of kahurangi national park.
the beach is flanked to the east and west by cliffs, but due to the flat topography of the area behind it, the beach area and the grassy dunes behind it are quite exposed to winds...
wharariki beach is perhaps best known for the archway islands, featured frequently in photos in new zealand landscape calendars. it is also the default lock screen image and one of desktop wallpapers on microsoft's windows 10 operating system. the archway islands are a group of four rock stacks or small islands, with even the largest one of them measuring only about 300 by 200 meters (980 by 660 ft).
the largest of the islands is closest to the mainland and adjoins wharariki Beach; it is generally not cut off by the sea. the second island lies about 150 meters (490 ft) offshore and is relatively flat and vegetated. the remaining two islands are typical rock stacks, with the larger one 66 meters (217 ft) tall and containing two natural rock arches, giving rise to the naming of the group of islands...
this place is a screensaver classic: a long, open beach where blue sea foams white onto sparkling sand, framed by sculpted cliffs with, as its focal point, a set of pierced islands.
although word is getting out, often there's no-one else to be seen here, unless you count the colony of fur seals playing in the rock pools. wharariki beach, at the northernmost tip of the south island's coast, is famously remote, rugged and spectacular, and even more special for not being always accessible.
a half-hour drive from the small town of collingwood takes you to the car park by the campsite. from there it's a brisk twenty-minute walk across sheep pastures and farmland, through bush, and a grove of coastal trees, and then over ridged sand dunes to get to the sea. here, you'll find a wide expanse of fine white sand full of golden sparkles, and not one footprint. that's as much because of the almost-constant wind as the remoteness: the sand is always on the move, and can even sting a bit on bare skin on a gusty day.
first, you'll notice the unimaginatively named archway islands and the rock stacks, close to the beach and sculpted by the restless sea into satisfyingly artistic shapes. then you'll look closer, and find fur seals...baby ones, in late summer found playing in the rock pools. and maybe you'll be lucky and even espy a leopard seal snoozing in a shady cave. look closer still, and you'll see the sandstone cliffs are layered with conglomerations of rounded pebbles, some of them marble.
the wind has been hard at work here as a sculptor too: behind the beach are matted thickets of bent and stunted manuka and grasses, forming permanent waves of vegetation. everywhere you look there is a natural glory to admire, and interact with: paddling in the stream and rock pools, poking into the sea caves, making driftwood sculptures, running and jumping down the huge dunes. even if you're not alone, the beach is big enough for everyone to have their space.
always visit wharariki beach at low tide. and be sure to keep an eye on the tide, knowing the local tide schedules...you don't want to be caught out, getting trapped at the end, stuck until the tide rolls out again in 4-6 hours. and don't even think about swimming here: the waves are fierce and the rip currents are powerful. be sure to visit earlier in the morning or later in the evening (depending on the low tide schedules), as sunsets and sunrises can both each be magnificent...and the view of the stars on a cloudless night is nothing short of spectacular. of course too, if it's exfoliation you're after, be sure to visit on a windy day...
"i will hope endlessly for the moment, when i look into your eyes and see love saying hello to me once again..." ― bodhinku, endlessly hello

MORE MEANINGFUL QUOTES
here is another song to listen to if you like... beautiful song that is sad, yet also full of hope and love (just click on the artist name or title of song for the music)...welcome home by tegan and sara ...
"the sun's rays don't bother me, no they cast down such a wonderful heat, masking beauty by a terrible fate if you fly too close and then you turn too late. the night still confuses me. we'd all get tired and have to sleep eventually regardless of the sun's demands, regardless if it made much sense...you moved so far that i know how far, and then you got so sad that i, i bought a car. yes i'll come get you and i will bring you home. i'll come get you and i will bring you home...he sat me down. he said he was incomplete. he thinks true love's gonna get him back on his feet. he said you only find love once in your life. so i guess when you find it, you're gonna hold it right, you'll hold it right...it makes no sense, because there's no sense in it at all. we all wait around, we wait for you to get tired and fall as your shadow it resumes in me. yes, your shadow it was made for me...she speaks clearly, he speaks loudly, i speak only clearly loudly. yes she speaks clearly, he speaks loudly, i speak only clearly loudly...yeah my shadow, well, it resumes with me. yes, my shadow, well, it was made for me...she told me love will come once in your life. so, i guess when you find it, you're gonna hold it right. you're gonna hold it right. you hold it right...you moved so far that i knew exactly how far, and then you got so sad that i, i bought a car. yes, i'll come get you and i will bring you home. i'll come get you and i will bring you home. i'll come get you and i'll say: welcome home" ― tegan and sara, welcome home
“start your day by awakening early to welcome the morning sun with a smile, love, and gratitude” ― siddhartha gautama buddha, the dhammapada
"i say hello to the skin covering you like a well-loved map shows the dog-eared pages denoting so many of my adventures; marks upon skin worn like boy scout badges showcasing moments in time and love...each have become a destination point for my traveling fingers and nomadic lips wandering the roads of this beloved atlas, exploring every road and paying great homage to each blessed site, and a fond hello again..." ― c. ara campbell
"remember who you are, remember past the lies that they taught you that you needed to be. remember the sacred lineage that flows within you. remember the silent truth of who you are deep down in the core of your being, and awaken. the silent winds are calling you and stirring deep your blood. without speaking, the ancients whisper wisdom into your veins, do you hear their sage words? are you ready to bear sacred witness to your own unfolding? the time has come to usher in the alchemy of your rebirth. are you ready? there is so much more that exists beyond the rules and regulations that have been created to hold you prisoner. a vast, lush forest tangled with truth and promise waits to welcome you home. it is there that i witness the truth of you, deep within the arms of the silence; never can they tear us apart, my king, warrior and muse, primal, naked and raw. adoring teacher, nurturing lover and gaia’s eternal son” ― c. ara campbell, silent winds (modified by bodhinku)
"for me, i’ve reached the part in my life where i need to embrace giving myself full permission to do what i want. this includes not only speaking my truth, and living in each moment, making each precious moment count...but also in wandering around more and experiencing what life has to offer. journeys offer transformation and a different perspective. and they can shake up the dusty parts of our souls and aid us in seeing the bigger picture. they can inspire us and help us to move towards something that may be missing. we often spend a lifetime playing the rolls that we are thought we must, ignoring what we wish. and then the time comes to expand horizons and it is an offer that we can no longer ignore. a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, as they say. or as the late anthony bourdain says: travel isn’t always pretty. it isn’t always comfortable. sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. but that’s okay. the journey changes you; it should change you. it leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. you take something with you. hopefully, you leave something good behind" ― c. ara campbell, what anthony bourdain taught me
“hello my love...this quiet, ongoing solitude of mine is how i say i miss you without admitting it to anyone out loud” ― beau taplin
“you will discover, just as the ballads and novels promise, that some loves really are forever. it is only the time you have together that is not.”― beau taplin
“in those joyless moments when loving yourself feels impossible, close your eyes, visualize your arms extending forward through time, and gently welcome the person you could be.” ― beau taplin
"to feel the love of people whom we love is a fire that feeds our life...and of all the fires, love is the only inexhaustible hello" ― pablo neruda, the book of questions
“still another day: today is that day,
the day that carried
a desperate light that since has died.
don't let the squatters know:
let’s keep it all between us,
day, between your bell
and my secret.
today is dead winter in the forgotten land
that comes to visit me, with a cross on the map
and a volcano in the snow, to return to me,
to return again the water
fallen on the roof of my childhood.
today when the sun began with its shafts
to tell the story, so clear, so old,
the slanting rain fell like a sword,
the rain my hard heart welcomes.
you, my love, still asleep in august,
my queen, my woman, my vastness, my geography
kiss of mud, the carbon-coated zither,
you, vestment of my persistent song,
today you are reborn again and with the sky’s
black water confuse me and compel me:
i must renew my bones in your kingdom,
i must still uncloud my earthly duties.” ― pablo neruda, still another day
"dive for dreams
or a slogan may topple you
(trees are their roots
and wind is wind)
trust your heart
if the seas catch fire
(and live by love
though the stars walk backward)
honour the past
but welcome the future
(and dance your death
away at this wedding)
never mind a world
with its villains or heroes
(for god likes girls
and tomorrow and the earth)" ― e.e. cummings
“the river passes by the side of a tree, saying hello, nourishing the tree, giving water to the tree…and it moves on, dances on. it does not cling to the tree. and the tree does not say, “where are you going? we are married! and before you can leave me you will need a divorce, or at least a separation! where are you going? and if you were going to leave me, why did you dance so beautifully around me? why did you nourish me in the first place?” ― osho, intimacy: trusting oneself and the other

"i think i fell in love with you the first time i said hello to you, and when i look at you, that’s all I’m ever going to see, the woman i love. it doesn’t matter if you’re perfect. to me, you will be, and that’s all that counts. it’ll be that way always. even years from now, when you’re older and wrinkled, i’ll see you with my heart, not my eyes. that’s just the way it is when you love someone. the imperfections don’t exist. if you see them at all, you think they’re beautiful" ― catherine anderson, sweet nothings
"feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the guilty, welcome the unwanted, care for the ill, love your enemies, and do unto others as you would have done unto you" ― steve maraboli, unapologetically you
“i know i am but summer to your heart,
and not the full four seasons of the year;
and you must welcome from another part
such noble moods as are not mine, my dear.
no gracious weight of golden fruits to sell
have i, nor any wise and wintry thing;
and i have loved you all too long and well
to carry still the high sweet breast of spring.
wherefore i say: o love, as summer goes,
i must be gone, steal forth with silent drums,
that you may hail anew the bird and rose
when i come back to you, as summer comes.
else will you seek, at some not distant time,
even your summer in another clime" ― edna saint vincent millay, collected poems
“begin today...mend a quarrel. seek out a forgotten friend. dismiss suspicion and replace it with trust. write a letter. give a soft answer. encourage youth. manifest your loyalty in word and deed. keep a promise. forgo a grudge. forgive an enemy. apologize. try to understand. examine your demands on others. think first of someone else. be kind. be gentle. laugh a little more. express your gratitude. welcome a stranger. gladden the heart of a child. take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth. speak your love and then speak it again" ― howard w. hunter

“we must know that when we invite people into our lives, we are not just inviting people; but we are inviting experiences into our lives, as well. the time that we will spend with the people that we welcome in, will be the time spent on creating experiences in our lives. we are not really taught this. we are not taught that attached to a person is a world, and in that world our feelings and thoughts will mingle with the feelings and thoughts of the other person. ultimately, we shape our lives depending upon our choices of the people we take in, and also depending upon the people that we couldn't choose. people are so much more than just lumps of bones, skin, and feelings. when they said one person can change the whole world, what that means is that if you change the life of one person, you are already changing one whole world. and vice versa. so be careful. be brave, but be careful.” ― c. joybell c
"hello, hello again...you might have forgot the journey ends. you tied your knots and you made your friends. you left the scene without a trace, one hand on the ground, one hand in space. oh, you passed on mercy. you tried the rest. you gave your body, you gave your best...staring at the green door, living in the sky. you don't want to know it, you just want to fly...hello, (hello) hello again...hello, (hello) hello again...i know (i know you're a dreamer) who's under the gun. i know (i know you're a dreamer) who's only just begun...hello, hello again, (i'm saying) hello, (hello) hello again...oh, and when there's nothing, nothing left to lose, you leave it all to fade to blue (oh, yeah, yeah) electric (wanna feel) loose (you wanna be) eclectic, you wanna call a truce (look) at the profile, staring at the flame (waiting) for the sunshine standing in the rain...hello again, (i said hello) hello, (hello) hello again, hello again, hello (uh oh), hello again. hello, hello
hello, hello..." ―

ABOUT THE IMPRESSION
"one forever hello
together flowing, into
each other and back through,
transfixing nirvana, with
love having no beginning or end, just
an endless infinity, of
a union so deep,
all we can do is be
so magically
overwhelmed, by
its rapture and rarity.
this goes unbounded, beyond
all our days shared...
we blossom together, like
flowers and then transform, into
birds and fly, into
one conjoined journey of
enlightenment,
our soaring paths, into
the sky overlapping wing on wing.
you are a flower. i am a flower.
i am a bird. you are a bird.
you are one. i am one. we are one
forever hello,
this is single frame long exposure composition of wharariki beach on the morning of the 20 february, 2020 (20-02-2020)...a stable and sturdy tripod was an absolute necessity in order to keep the image in sharp focus in the places i wanted sharpness (i use selective focus on most of my images, similar to the way our eyes see things)...for this i used a dolica 70" carbon fiber tripod because it is sturdy, tall, and perfectly compact for hiking to remote places, or travel to locations where amounts of permitted luggage and equipment you can travel with is limited, such as new zealand...for me, this shot would never have been possible without my friends daniel and april at dolica tripods.
in my photography i always use filters to create longer exposure effects and to balance the light in my composition in camera...i often use as many as four filters at time, and i always use at least one filter...in the case with this image, to get the effects and balance i was looking for, i used two filters...for this, i chose to use the magnetic 3.0nd progrey antarctica filter (and progrey g-120z holder) to allow for a much longer exposure (10 stops) and help saturate all the greens in the grass as well as on the top of the larger archway island, the blues of ocean waters, the bright red and yellows on the horizon line, and and earthy tones of the sands in the foreground, saturate much more than would be possible with a short exposure time, plus in combination with the 0.9gnd progrey genesis filter to help balance in-camera overall the image the way i envisioned it, as the sky was much more brighter, about 3 stops brighter than the rest of the darker parts and shadows of the foreground of the image composition...
i wish to openly thank my sponsors who have always supported me through both the good and bad times...for truly this semi-long exposure impression would not be possible without the use of my trusty dolica tripods in combination with the progreyusa filters which i use with every photo i take...
"every single time i say hello to you, as i look into your eyes, i know exactly what i will be missing" ― bodhinku, missing hello
"contemplate without thinking. stop the world. slow down everything. shut off the noise. relax. seize this moment. reconnect. feel and sense what surrounds you. listen to all the colors of light that envelope you. see the melody and harmony that floats about unnoticed. taste the solitude of all this wonderment. smell the beautiful silence. now discover your peaceful serenity. then, reach out and touch your faith with all your senses. this is my world. awaken!" ― bodhinku, my world
above all else as always, i hope this message and impression find you well.
namaste,
