"kako'o" is my brand new impression and blog...
"some people find support in prayer, some find it in love, others find it in family, some find it in a fur baby, some find it in friendship, and others find it in community. i believe in a combination, for it's in variety that we can always discover our healthier self" ― bodhi, kako'o (support)
"lean on me, when you're not strong. and i'll be your friend, i'll help you carry on. for it won't be long, till i'm gonna need somebody to lean on" ― bill withers, lean on me
"if the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall, or the mountain should crumble to the sea. i won't cry, i won't cry. no, i won't shed a tear just as long as you stand, stand by me" ― ben e. king, stand by me
"truth, i guess truth is what you believe in. and faith, i think faith is having a reason. and i know, know love, if your wings are broken, borrow mine so yours can open too, 'cause i'm gonna stand by you. even if we're breaking down, we can find a way to break through" ― rachel platten, stand by you
"it's amazing how you don't realize just how alone and scared you were until you have someone by your side to support you" ― colleen hoover, confess
"difficult and easy support each other. long and short define each other. high and low depend on each other. before and after follow each other. therefore the wise one acts without doing anything and teaches without saying anything" ― lao tzu, tao te ching
"when we wake up each day choosing to live a life of support, we are throwing aside all other jealousies, confusions, ideas and mushy-brain-garbage that doesn’t really matter, and just genuinely caring for other people" ― tori kelner, wedding photographer
"in
my soul
there is a temple, a shrine, a mosque, a church
where i kneel.
prayer should bring us to an altar where no walls or names exist.
is there not a region of love where the sovereignty is
illumined nothing,
where ecstasy gets poured into itself
and becomes
lost,
where the wing is fully alive
but has no mind or
body?
in
my soul
there is a temple, a shrine, a mosque,
a church
that dissolve, that
dissolve in
god" ― rabia al basri, in my soul
"support is a two way street, giving and receiving are both equally important...being there for someone when they need us, as well as having someone in our corner when we need them..." ― bodhi, kako'o (support)
this song, it's the perfect accompaniment to connect music with the meaning of "support" in my impression and blog today, as its about that loving support we need for the special someone in our lives...i really love this updated cover version by a favorite beautiful voice, florence welsh, and her indie alternative band from britain released in 2016... "stand by me" by florence + the machine (ben e. king cover) ... (just click on any of the words in the powder blue links to listen to the tune and watch the video) ...
and for those who would like to hear the original version from 1961, it's such a beautiful and amazing version too by the late great legendary ben e. king: "stand by me" by ben e. king (original) ...
"when the night has come, and the land is dark, and the moon is the only light we'll see. no, i won't be afraid, oh, i won't be afraid just as long as you stand, stand by me. so darling, darling stand by me. oh, stand by me. oh, stand now, stand by me, stand by me...if the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall, or the mountain should crumble to the sea. i won't cry, i won't cry. no, i won't shed a tear just as long as you stand, stand by me. and darling, darling stand by me. oh, stand by me, oh, stand now. stand by me, stand by me. and darling, darling stand by me...whenever you're in trouble, won't you stand by me? oh, stand by me. oh, stand now, stand by me. and darling, darling stand by me. oh, stand by me. oh, stand now, stand by me" ― florence + the machine, stand by me (ben e. king cover)
"i'm definitely better together with her...sometimes she is all the support i need. just by looking into her eyes and seeing love reflecting back onto me, i feel all the added strength and support i need to get through any struggle or difficult time" ― bodhi, kako'o (support)
----------------------
first off, i want to start by giving thanks. i'm so deeply grateful for this planet and the support it give back to me. i'm truly thankful to be blessed to be alive and get to see, experience, and photograph all of the beauty that this world has to offer. but i'm more deeply thankful and grateful for everyone's support of this photography of mine, for without you, there would be less meaning in my works, i give my mahalo to all of you, thank you and namaste!!
"kako'o" (pronounced "ka-ah-koh-oh" (i love this pronunciation!) is a hawaiian word and translates to mean: "support"
and the word "support" is defined by merriam-webster:
1. bear all or part of the weight of; hold up; serve as a foundation
2. give assistance, approval, comfort, or encouragement to another
this beautiful pier is being help up and supported by the columns underneath it...without their foundation, the pier would succumb to the wear and tear of the ocean much more rapidly...the columns are also beautiful in their own way, and gain meaning by supporting the pier and allowing the pier to take form and function. a circle of trust between the two is created, as they need each other to be able to get farther in life than they could do alone...this is another beautiful metaphor for life, a lesson we all can learn...
"lift up and support another in love, and you will lift up yourself in love as well" ― bodhi, kako'o
some people find support in prayer, some find it in love, others find it in family, some find it in a fur baby, some find it in friendship, and others find it in community. i believe in a combination, for it's in variety that we can always discover our healthier self
"support feels like it has to be a tangible act, like physically doing something for someone else, but support starts from within. it starts at your core on an emotional level where you decide every single day that you are here to lift others up. it starts with awareness by finding it in your heart to consciously change how you think of others. support isn’t something that just happens" ― tori kelner, wedding photographer
giving your support can come through numbers of forms too. you can actively help some one out, you can physically help someone out, you can help someone our financially, you can support someone's cause, you can support someone's artwork or performance, or you can just be there for someone, listen to them, hold space for them in silence, and let them know you love them, offering genuine encouragement, reassurance, and compassion...
support is a two way street, giving and receiving are both equally important...being there for someone when they need us, as well as having someone in our corner when we need them...
we are always able to go farther in our lives with support, going it all alone is tough and sometime impossible. we need to offer our support to others, it's a great feeling being able to be there for another person when they need it... as well as be gracious when receiving support, no matter how stubborn you are, or if you think you can handle everything perfectly by yourself without anyone's help, you'll only find loneliness and frustration...
in giving and in receiving support from others, we must drop our ego, which is such a grand thing to do...because unfortunately, holding on to ego will get you nowhere but into a place where you are eventually all alone with only your ego...
in accepting support from others, we gain a source of strength and a sense of community. we gain someone who can share our burdens with us, and take some of the weight and stress off our shoulders...and we learn more deeply about the importance of gratitude, humility, and love...
in giving our support to another, we gain a source of understanding and empathy, a beautiful sense of unselfishness, goodwill, and sharing. we learn to listen better and we become more proactive and aware of someone else's needs. altruism gains real meaning, and we become more real and godly by helping out and genuinely caring for another's well being...
giving and receiving support is truly a blessing in our lives never to be overlooked...
"i'm truly blessed and seriously thankful every day to have my good friends, my parents, my doggie, my students, mother nature, and my girlfriend as a loving support network. without them, my life would have little meaning or purpose" ― bodhi, kako'o
this next song is the perfect song to accompany my image and blog today, for it carries the exact meaning i wish for this impression to convey, the meaning that support is a two way street...this timeless song is beautiful and impeccable in its message of support for a brotherhood of humankind...it's literally one of my favorite songs of all time, both the original from fifty years ago in 1972 and this cover version from my high school days in 1986 ..."lean on me" by club nuevo (bill withers cover) ...
and for those who would like to hear the original version, such a timeless version too by the late great bill withers (who passed away two years ago in the spring of 2020): "lean on me" by bill withers (original) ...
"sometimes in our lives we all have pain, we all have sorrow. but if we are wise, we know that there's always tomorrow. lean on me, when you're not strong. and i'll be your friend, i'll help you carry on. for it won't be long, till i'm gonna need somebody to lean on...please swallow your pride if i have things you need to borrow. for no one can fill those of your needs that you don't let show. lean on me, when you're not strong. and i'll be your friend, i'll help you carry on. for it won't be long, till i'm gonna need somebody to lean on...if there is a load you have to bear that you can't carry. i'm right up the road, i'll share your load, if you just call me. so just call on me brother, when you need a hand, we all need somebody to lean on. i just might have a problem that you'd understand, we all need somebody to lean on...lean on me, when you're not strong. and i'll be your friend, i'll help you carry on. for it won't be long, till i'm gonna need somebody to lean on" ― club nuevo, lean on me (bill withers cover)
"a huge support network for me is mother nature...when i need to feel better or loved, or just connected to the universe, i go outside into the wilderness and find a tree, a waterfall, a beach, a mountain, or i just simply stand under the stars and thank god i'm alive" ― bodhi, kako'o

STORY BEHIND THIS IMPRESSION
"the mana, the spiritual energy of power and strength, of our ancestors gives us life and direction, so for those who came before us, we give our mahalo...wai ola, the living water sustains the life of all who live on mother earth, for without precious water there would be no life, so for wai ola we are eternally grateful and give our mahalo. the ‘aina, our priceless earth and soil which sustains the children of the land (keiki o ka ‘aina) and our future, we give our mahalo, for without it's form and shape we could not hold the wai that gives us life and without it's warmth and mana we could not grow the mea'ai (food) which feeds and supports our bodies upon papa, our earth mother. it's for all these things we give our mahalo...and for all the blessings of love we have, we give our mahalo!" ― hawaiian saying (modified by bodhinku)
this image was captured on the north shore of the hawaiian island of kauai facing out to sea while kneeling underneath the handalei pier in hanalei bay at sunset uring my recent trip there on april 12, 2022...
sunset of the hanalei pier is almost always beautiful and the picture really captures itself from the right perspective...i seldom release images of places that have been shot by millions of photographers through the years, but this is a different scene, a super long exposure of over five minutes long (333 seconds in all) creating the magical dreamy effect of the water and such rich and boldly beautiful colors, of a quality which most people have never viewed from this location...it's something unique and in my own unwavering long exposure style...hope you love this picture as much as i loved being there in kauai capturing the composition...

HISTORY OF THE HANALEI PIER
"she said aloha to me, i said aloha to her, it was the beginning of this world. we loved and lived and loved some more, until we had to say aloha to each other and part for a while" ― bodhi, aloha
hanalei pier is a pier built into hanalei bay on the northern shore of the island of kauai in the state of hawaii.
the wetlands of hanalei bay were used to grow taro by ancient hawaiians. by the 1860s, the shrinking population of native hawaiians was being replaced by ethnic chinese people when their contracts expired on sugarcane plantations in hawaii, such as the one directly to the north in princeville close to hanalei. the new crop was rice, which was shipped to honolulu to become the second largest export crop of the islands. after the annexation of hawaii to the u.s. in 1898, hawaiian rice could not compete with rice grown in california and shipments declined.
the pier was originally built of wood in 1892. it was erected to support the shipping of agricultural goods, particualrly rice. in the early 1900's, work began to extend the pier, and it was eventually lengthened to 340 feet (100 m) in 1912. in 1921, the legislature authorized $25,000usd for a new concrete deck, as the wooden deck was too difficult to maintain in the tropical climate. conney and morris were selected as contractors, and finished the construction of the new deck by the end of 1922. by 1933 the pier was no longer used for shipping because hawaiian rice was no longer lucrative to grow on kauai. the shed roof was finally constructed at the far end of the pier in the 1940s.
the pier was heavily damaged in 1992 as a result of hurricane iniki. in 2012–13, the canopy at the end of the pier was restored. the hanalei rotary club raised over $170,000 to restore the neglected canopy in a program coined "save the pier."
although originally owned by the state, the land at the base of the pier is a kauai county park known as black pot beach. it is located at the end of weke road north of hi route 560. adjacent to the north is the mouth of the hanalei river, where a public boat landing provides recreational and commercial access
since it was abandoned for shipping in 1933, the hanalei pier's scenic location on hanalei bay is now a favorite family gathering place for fishing, picnicking, swimming, paddle-boarding, boating, and playing. it offers stunning views of the bay, its 2-mile long crescent beach, and the mountains behind hanalei town. if you can't resist jumping in, a ladder bolted to the side will help you climb back up.
the hanalei pier was also the main filming area for the 1954 film beachhead and the well known and beloved 1957 romantic musical by rodgers and hammerstein, south pacific. the pier was added to the national register of historic places on september 13, 1979, as site 79000757...
"we said aloha, we touched our foreheads together and breathed each other in. we hugged and kissed--and kissed and hugged. we danced and danced, then danced some more. so happy with aloha in our hearts, renewing everything blessed since time first began. now i carry her in my arms, as well as in my heart, aloha my love!" ― bodhi, aloha

MORE BODHI QUOTES
and now here are a few more quotes from bodhi and bodhinku from past blogs to help add to the deeper meaning of this blog today...
"i was born into this body, and i said aloha to this world...but where was she? the memory of her mystery cried aloha in my veins, awakening inside me the memories of my soul through the millennia. her soul deep love cried aloha to me in dreams for 50 years. i called out to her with every fiber of my existence. only there she was, and yet wasn't. she existed, but i could only feel her in my heart and know with certainty that somewhere she was longing for me too..." ― bodhi, aloha
"as kindred souls,
we've said aloha
in love
to each other infinitely,
over and over
through centuries
of time and space...
rediscovering each other
endlessly in aloha,
living in love together
until we must let go
of one another
in aloha, always
knowing we'll manage
to find each other
again and be
together as one,
because aloha lives
in both of us
"our possibilities together are endless. the universe is conspiring to lead us to our bliss, and the path is ours! we can say hello and goodbye, aloha. but we are always there in the middle, between coming and going, no matter what forever, because i carry your heart, i carry it in my heart" ― bodhi, aloha

ABOUT THE IMPRESSION
"sometimes all someone needs is some one, and sometimes all you need is some time for that someone" ― bodhi, kako'o
this impression was captured in one single exposure taken just before the sunset while i was underneath the hanalei pier on the north shore of kauai, hawaii at 6:55pm hst on april 12, 2022 (f/5@22mm for 333 seconds, iso-64)
in my photography, i always use filters to create longer exposure effects, saturate colors naturally, and balance the light in my composition in-camera...i often use as many as four filters at time, and i always use at least one filter in my completed impressions...
first, 3.0nd (10-stop) progrey titan filter to bring the light in the image down 10 stops and permit for this extremely long 5 minutes and 33 second exposure which gives the blue waters the dreamy misty effect along with naturally saturating all the red, green, and especially the blue (rgb) colors in this image...
combined with the second filter, a 0.9 gnd progrey titan filter to help balance in-camera overall the image the way i envisioned it...in this case, to stop down the much brighter light in the sky, the bright sunset light in the upper right hand portion of the image, an extra three stops and help permit the finer details in the shadow areas of the image to come out better in the exposure (especially details in the underbelly of the pier and the concreate of the pier supports)...
"you were blessed with 84,600 seconds today, have you used one of them to say thank you?" ― bodhi, blessed
"if nothing else...if i open my eyes, if i hope, if i cry, if i think, if i sigh, if i giggle, if i dance, if i love, if i breathe, then i have lived a full days worth of life...nothing is wasted, nothing" ― bodhi, if nothing else
"i do not want you to just be into my photography, instead, i'd much rather you take a journey into my pictures, and feel the impression i have created, feel it with all your senses" ― bodhi, into my photography
"contemplate without thinking. be certain only in your uncertainty, content to be completely incomplete. stop the rush. slow down time. breathe and notice. slow down everything. let it all be. shut off the noise. hush. relax. seize this higher moment. reconnect. feel and sense what surrounds you. listen to all the colours of light whisper as they envelope you. see the melody and harmony that float about unnoticed. taste the solitude of all this wonderment. smell the beautiful silence. now discover your peaceful serenity. then, reach out and touch your faith with all your senses. this is my world. awaken!" ― bodhi, my world
i leave you today wishing that bright joy
and spiritual peace fill your life...
imploring you to make every moment count,
no matter what, always and forever,
for that is the only thing that truly matters...
and above all else,
i hope this message and impression find you well.
namaste,
bodhi
