here is another song i would like you to give an honest listen to...and by the way, i almost named this new impression "love is my religion" after the meaning of this song, instead of "higher love"...this reggae classic by bob marley's eldest son, ziggy marley is my all-time favorite reggae tune, and one with a deep message about how honoring and valuing love is the highest faith in the universe, transcending all beings and all religions..."love is my religion" by ziggy marley ...(just click on any of words in the blue links to listen to the song)...
"love is my religion, love is my religion, love is my religion, i'll take you to the temple tonight. all my days i've been searching to find out what this life is worth. through the books and bibles of time, i've made up my mind. i don't condemn, i don't convert, this is a calling have you heard? bring all the lovers to the fold, 'cau"se no one is gonna lose their soul...love is my religion, love is my religion, love is my religion...hey you can take it or leave it, and you don't have to believe it. i don't want to fight, hey let's go fly a kite. there's nothing that we can't cure, and i'll keep you in my arms for sure. so don't let nobody stop us, free spirits have to soar. with you i share the gift, the gift that we now know oh oh oh. love is my religion, love is my religion, love is my religion...hey you can take it or leave it, and you don't have to believe it. well i'm done searching now, i found out what this life is worth. not in the books that i find, but by searching my mind. i don't condemn, i don't convert. this is the calling have you heard, bring all the lovers to the fold, no one is gonna lose their soul...love is my religion, love is my religion, love is my religion...hey you can take it or leave it, and you don't have to believe it...love is my religion, love is my religion, love is my religion...hey you can take it or leave it, now that you believe" ― ziggy marley, love is my religion
"life should be all about positive living and love, rising up higher above everything for something bigger than yourself" ― bodhinku, positive living
i had noticed this gigantic cross a couple times while journeying along the 1-40 freeway (old historic route 66) from california to oklahoma and push-pin marked it as a photo spot of the future in my google maps...you literally cannot miss it, for at some point it will catch your attention, especially since you can see it for nearly 20 miles (32 km) since the texas panhandle is so flat...
so while i was driving past in early august 2020 on my way back to california from visiting my family in eastern oklahoma, i stopped with my pup, besos, to explore the area and take images of this gigantic 19 story cross with my two nikon cameras, progrey filters, and dolica tripods...
i knew i wanted to capture the stars, and originally wanted to get the colorful core of the milky way over top of the cross...however, this was not possible in august at this location, as the cross faces east-west, and in the west are the lights of amarillo, tx, blowing out the sky with light pollution...but honestly, i truly love the image that found me instead...
this impression truly has a mystical aura to it...and btw, the ethereal skyward shooting beams of light in this image were just sheer luck, not planned, or hoped for, these rays just happened to magically appear about half an hour after i started to take portraits of the cross during a texas sunset...
HISTORY
"just because you are not of the same religious faith, does not mean that you cannot believe in the same universal values, morals, ethics, ideals, and expressions of love" ― bodhinku, just because
“...this is the reality of being human, that we have the capacity to love people...family, friends, and strangers...even if we profoundly disagree with them" ― vivek h. murthy, together
this minimalist and inspirational roadside landmark stands over 58 meters tall (190 ft) and can be seen for miles and miles around as you drive along the i-40 across texas...
the i-40 follows the path of old historic route 66. the mother road's legacy of rope-'em-in salesmanship wasn't lost on the texas millionaire who bankrolled the cross. it's more than just a 2.5-million-pound steel hallelujah--it's also a heaven-scraping billboard, luring travelers to other christian shrines arrayed within its long shadow.
rumor has it that the millionaire responsible built the cross as a direct ethical contrast to all of the billboards along the same stretch of the 1-40 freeway that disgusted him, numerous signs advertizing xxx pornography, debautchery, strip joints, and adult sex toy stores...
at the site of the giant cross, there's a distinct roman catholic/lutheran visual skew to the ancillary attractions at the cross. one example can be spotted even as you drive in on the access road: a line of bronze bent figures at the foot of the cross lugging other crosses in a never-ending circle. these are the 14 stations of the cross, rendered life-size. jesus is condemned by a scowling pontius pilate, meets his sad mom, collapses several times...the last one face down on the concrete...he is stripped of his clothes by a guard wearing a ridiculous feathered helmet, and then has nails pounded through his bronze flesh with a hammer.
to one side, and off-topic, a statue of saint michael the archangel tramples satan...
a bronze last supper features jesus breaking bread facing the cross, sitting on the ground at an earthen table surrounded by his twelve disciples. behind him, stairs ascend a man-made cavalry hill, with the trinity at the top, where a sign reveals that you are now 3,333 feet above sea level (many christians believe that jesus was 33 years old when he was crucified).
next to this is the empty tomb (and underneath), reproduced in all its rocky glory just west of the cross. statues of two custom-made angels augment the scene, one staring at his outstretched palms as if to say, "where'd jesus go?"
and beyond that a small building that displays a full-size replica of the shroud of turin on a wall. it's one of only seven in the world, according to another sign.
the gift shop and restrooms were built around the divine mercy fountain, a beautiful rocky setting with yet another christ statue; its plaque celebrates, "the blood and water which gushed forth from the heart of jesus." off to the east side of the cross stands an anti-abortion memorial shaped like a tombstone; a bronze jesus kneels, dejected, in front of it with a tiny fetus cupped in his hands, just below his spike-punctured wrists...
according to the cross's promotional literature, it was inspired by another giant (but smaller) cross in texas, and in turn inspired an even more gigantic cross in effingham, illinois. the land surrounding the cross was donated by a different texas millionaire than the one who built it; this second millionaire built the leaning water tower down route 66 that's the only other attraction in town.
the cross and calvary are dramatically floodlit at night, and its boosters want travelers to know that the attraction is free, has clean restrooms (available during gift shop hours), is open 24/7, and has ample parking for rv's and big rigs.
very cool and inspirational place to stop, meditate, and hang out...lots of cool history, neato bronze statues full of amazing details...all surrounded by a deep air of peacefulness...great for everyone, not just christians...
