"Symmetry" is a New Release from BODHI SMITH.
“Seeing all life in perfect symmetry. Perceiving each day with righteous clarity. Living each moment in purposed reality. Believing each day is the start of eternity.” ― S. Tarr, Love, Adventure and Other Noble Quests
This is an image of the amazing architecture of Louis Kahn at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA. Be aware that this composition is a COMPOSITE with the Milky Way brushed into the blue skies above the Salk Institute during post production...
Stars like this would be impossible to capture in a single frame at this location with this position of the Milky Way in the western sky, even with many stars, let alone the full Milky Way being visible at this location with all the light pollution from UCSD and La Jolla, plus the campus here is locked up after 5:30 to the public so you could not be here at night to even capture an image of the stars...This image is a fantasy image from my mind's eye of what it might look like if you could see the stars over the Salk Institute...
“Even a brick wants to be something. It aspires...to be something more than it is...something better than it is.” ― Louis Kahn, Architect of Salk Institute
“Her face was a synthesis of perfect symmetry and unusual proportion; he could have gazed at it for hours, trying to locate the source of its fascination.” ― J.K. Rowling

For this image, the Salk Institute does not permit tripods on the grounds for photography, so the image was hand held...however, a tripod was an absolute necessity for the stars portion of this composite...needed to be able to hold the camera absolutely steady for this 15 second exposure.. I used a Dolica 70" Carbon Fiber tripod....for me, this shot would never have been possible without my friends Daniel and April at Dolica Tripods.
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love's symmetry never ends.” ― Jeanette Winterson
I have always loved the symmetry in all the lines at this location, definitely one of the most beautiful and masterful displays of architecture in the world with the "River of Life" that flows from a fountain through a shallow channel that runs down the exact middle of the travertine courtyard between the institute's buildings, and flows into a pool facing the Pacific Ocean...the suns sets perfectly over the "River of Life" twice a year on the Equinox in the spring and fall when there is equal hours of daylight and night...a ingenious idea by Louis Kahn (architect of The Salk Institute) to connect nature so fluidly to something made of concrete, The water was what always drew me in to take a picture here, I am more desiring of seeing and capturing with my camera those natural things in nature, but this perfectly created artistic space filled with concrete has its own symmetrical beauty, especially with the sun lighting up its walls and beaming off the flowing water...and the contrasts of nature and man-made structure here, their vast differences create a symmetry all in it of itself.
“Architecture appears for the first time when the sunlight hits a wall. The sunlight did not know what it was before it hit a wall.” ― Louis Kahn, Architect of Salk Institute
"I’ve realized that sometimes things can be a little different, almost vastly different, yet make perfect sense when they are brought together. Sometimes differences are what make things symmetrical.” ― Taryn Leigh, Perfect Imperfections
Only in the winter are you able to see a sunset, as the institute hours have it closing at 5:30pm, so sunset has to happen before closing time. The picture I captured here was of the afterglow of the sunset to the south right now, which really illuminated the courtyard gloriously for the image you see here--and I took this image just as I were being asked to leave since the institute was closing within minutes...when i took this image, i already knew i would be using an image i took in Utah of the stars earlier in the summer to create my composition...
"Stop the world. Slow down everything. Shut off the noise. Seize this moment. Reconnect. Feel and sense what surrounds you. Listen to all the colors of light that envelope you. See the melody and harmony that floats about unnoticed. Taste the solitude of all this wonderment. Smell the beautiful silence within your peaceful serenity. Then, reach out and touch your faith. This is my world." ― bodhinku
